Coffee folks will offer differing opinions on the degrees of freshness and taste loss when coffee beans get ground up and packaged but there’s no argument among them that coffee made immediately after it’s brewed keeps its aromas and flavor. As soon as beans are ground, the oxidation process starts.

Traditionally speaking, fresh ground coffee has been a treat enjoyed in a coffee house or Sunday mornings in our own kitchen. But VSSL now makes it possible to have fresh-ground coffee (for two people actually!) in your most favorite places … outdoor places. Imagine rolling out of the tent in a valley, a camp spot by a river, the cabin of your moored sailboat or a backcountry yurt, and easily grinding your own beans for two fresh, flavorful cups of your favorite roast?

The Nest Pour over kit is compatible with VSSL’s Java G25 Grinder (sold separately at $160) to create one compact, easy to carry kit that will grind and brew your beans literally anywhere.

The overall kit includes two stainless double-wall insulated 10 oz. mugs, reusable stainless mesh coffee filter, a splash-resistant lid, a stainless double-walled pour-over dripper and a food-grade storage connector that fastens to the Java G25. There are few things an outdoor person who loves coffee will appreciate more than that hot, fresh caffeination on some remote beach between the roaring ocean and a maritime forest.

VSSL is best known for super-quality vessels that packs different emergency outdoor tools and first aid into compact cylinders for comping, backcountry riding, surfing, hiking and exploring. The kits are gorgeous in their esthetic and design with real functionality and the Nest is an extension of that. The double-wall has a vacuum layer that acts as a thermal barrier to minimize heat transfer and condensation, keeping hot coffee hot as you plan your route for the day or check the weather. And the fact that it’s made of 80% recycled steel means that the production uses far less energy, making it a more sustainable product and protecting the very outdoors we are enjoying.—Jon Coen, Men's Journal contributor
