The second annual running of Miami's Formula 1 Grand Prix wowed fans over the weekend, with great fanfare and celebrity appearances as racing's finest descended on the city.
Jordan Sanford, a social media star known for his car reviews on YouTube and TiKTok, linked up with Pirelli for a hot lap tour of the Miami International Autodrome. Behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DBX 707, Sanford and his driver take on the course, which hosts the high-octane Formula 1 races.
"I'm so nervous, I've never really done anything like this. I've gone maybe 90 on the highway so I'm really really scared. As you can see I'm shaking a little bit," Sanford said as they kicked things off.
It's Miami's second year hosting the Formula 1 race, a sport that's seen exponential growth in the U.S. on the heels of the popular Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive. Sports Illustrated reporter Claudette Montana caught up with racing fans down in South Florida to find out why they think it's the perfect venue for F1.
"The heat, the sun, the beach," offered one fan, while another mused "I don't have to cross the Atlantic Ocean to get there." Another observer called it a "one-of-a-kind experience," with many praising the city's famously warm and sunny climate.
Max Verstappen took first place in the race after starting in ninth on the grid. Italy's Sergio Perez claimed second, while Spain's Fernando Alonso landed in third. It wasn't the only racing drama of the weekend, either, with a NASCAR race out in Kansas ending in a fistfight between two teammates.
