College Football Playoff: Key Questions That Will Define the Postseason

The College Football Playoff kicks off on New Year’s Eve, with two semifinals to take you through your end-of-2022 celebrations. No. 2 Michigan and No. 3 TCU meet in the Fiesta Bowl semi near Phoenix at 4 p.m. (EST), and then No. 1 Georgia plays a de facto home game against No. 4 Ohio State in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta at 8 p.m. (EST). ESPN will televise both games on its main channel.

This year marks the ninth year of the College Football Playoff, and competitive semifinals have been vanishingly rare over the tournament’s first decade. The last time a semifinal’s scoring margin was within one possession was in 2019, and the average score in the 16 semis overall is 39–18.

Even so, both of these games are teetering around seven-point margins on Las Vegas point spreads, and maybe one of them will buck the trend and turn into a show. Here are three key storylines to keep an eye on while you’re watching.
