The invention of the Skyliner Jacket—the first down jacket patented in the US—was the result of a near-death experience. Eddie Bauer was in the middle of a winter fishing trip in the Pacific Northwest and had a life-threatening encounter with hypothermia. Surviving, he used this as motivation to create a jacket that could stand up to the brutality of northwestern winters. Combining his knowledge of outerwear with that of feathers and down from working with fishing flies and shuttlecocks, he created the first version of the legendary Skyliner Jacket.

This Skyliner Jacket is a bomber-style down jacket that’s lightweight and maneuverable while still providing ample warmth, protection, and durability. It’s lined with soft flannel and features a durable water-repellent (DWR) coating and 800 fill down that’s Responsible Down Certified. It also features two hand pockets on the front and one interior zipper pocket that can fit most cell phones. Classically, it has a zip-closure as well as a ribbed, elasticized hemline and cuff detail to seal in heat.

This is not the typical Skyliner Jacket, which is also on sale. Huckberry has partnered with Eddie Bauer to elevate this iconic American jacket by adding the former’s sought-after wax coating to the outer shell for increased weather resistance and upping the cozy factor with the flannel lining.

When Huckberry first dropped this jacket, it sold out so quickly that it became one of the brand’s most successful collaborations ever. And while reviews haven’t come in quite yet for the limited-run Breen colorway, those from the initial release paint a picture of what to expect.

“Love the look. Such a classic style,” as one shopper described. “The quality of the materials is just excellent. Super thick and soft flannel lining, lots of down, and durable exterior. This jacket is seriously warm…I was perfectly comfortable with just a T-shirt underneath going for a walk in 20-degree weather.”

“I instantly fell in love with this jacket and the great flannel lining,” another shopper said. “It is very warm and it will be toasty when the temps drop here in Northern Minnesota…A great garment, I definitely would recommend it.”
