Dave Portnoy Claims He Won $1M in College Football Bet

Dave Portnoy’s New Year is off to a particularly good start. The Barstool Sports founder reportedly earned a cool $1 million after Michigan, his alma mater, won the Rose Bowl championship. Making the win even sweeter, this was the first bet Portnoy had placed after “retiring” from gambling in 2023 following a string of “monster losses.”

Michigan’s Wolverines defeated Alabama’s Crimson Tides 27–20 during a goal-line stand in overtime. It was Michigan’s first championship win since 1997, but that didn’t sway Portnoy’s betting enthusiasm. In December, he announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he would be coming out of gambling retirement to put a million on Michigan.

Portnoy’s assurance paid off. Video captured at Rose Bowl Stadium shows the moment he realized his bet had come through. “Holy fucking shit, I’m a million fucking bucks richer. We’re going to fucking Houston,” Portnoy marveled in the self-recorded footage. “Finally the Big Ten punched the SEC in the mouth. Watching their teeth break. Tale of two halves, we dominated the first and they dominated the second…When everything was on the line, it was the Michigan men who stood up and made plays when we need to.”

While Portnoy’s payday certainly goes a long way towards repairing the pain incurred by his previous losses, he seemed more excited about what the win meant for Michigan.

“Finally, a Big Ten team sticks it to the big bad bully,” he said. “We ain't done, we got a national title,” he reiterated. “Yeah, I’m a million richer, I don’t fuckin’ care. This is about the [national].”

The Wolverines will next compete with the winner of Washington and Texas in Houston on January 8.
