Visitors to Chicago starting today, August 15, may miss out on one of the city's most famous attractions. Cloud Gate, otherwise known as The Bean, will have limited access through the spring of 2024 as the city begins to undergo routine maintenance on Grainger Plaza, which surrounds the famous sculpture.
The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events announced the closures in a statement on its website.
"During this time, public access and views of Cloud Gate will be limited," the agency wrote. "This necessary maintenance by the City of Chicago will replace pavers and make other repairs and accessibility upgrades to the Plaza—to enhance the nearly 20-year-old Park’s appearance, visitor experience, and position as the #1 attraction in the Midwest."
The Bean, located at 201 E. Randolph Street in the Chicago's Millennium Park, was first unveiled in 2006. Designed by Indian-born British sculptor Anish Kapoor, The Bean was assembled from 168 stainless steel plates welded together, with no visible seams. The sculpture was inspired by liquid mercury, distorting anything reflected in its highly polished surface. For this reason, it's become both a favorite and obligatory photo op for the millions of tourists who visit every year.
The last time The Bean was closed to the public was back in March of 2020, amid the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
