Disney World Is Closing This Costly 'Star Wars' Attraction

Just over a year after welcoming its first guests, Disney World announced on Thursday that it would be closing its Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser two-day boutique hotel experience in late September.

Since opening, the attraction has garnered both good and bad press. Though it earned some of the highest guest satisfaction ratings in the history of the theme park, as well as a Thea Award for outstanding achievement in brand experience, the cost-prohibitive nature made it inaccessible for the average Star Wars fan.

Prices started at $1,200 per-person, per-day, with family packages costing around $6,000 for the 48-hour trip. That's what many families might spend for an entire week at Disney Parks. The price tag included the hotel room, all food and drink with the exception of alcoholic and specialty beverages, a day trip to the Hollywood Studios park, a Magic Band, and valet service.

But for fans who could afford the journey, it was a dream come true. Guests played a part in an immersive experience in which they were passengers aboard a star cruiser for a two-day voyage, but the Halcyon is soon interrupted by a First Order officer and stormtroopers looking for Resistance spies. Each guest then gets to decide, choose-your-own-adventure style, whether they want to align with the light or the dark side.

The colorful cast of characters is rounded out by a number of spies, musicians, rebels, and reluctant heroes; as well as some familiar faces including Chewbacca, Rey, and Kylo Ren.

In a statement, Disney did not give a reason for shutting down the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, but suggested that the limited scale may have played a factor.

"Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser is one of our most creative projects ever and has been praised by our guests and recognized for setting a new bar for innovation and immersive entertainment,” the company said. “This premium, boutique experience gave us the opportunity to try new things on a smaller scale of 100 rooms, and as we prepare for its final voyage, we will take what we’ve learned to create future experiences that can reach more of our guests and fans."

The final voyage of the Galactic Starcruiser is set to run from Sept. 28 to 30, 2023.
