'Blue Beetle' Trailer: Meet DC’s First-ever Latino Superhero

A fast food container bears a mysterious gift for Jaime Reyes—and his life will never be the same once he opens it.

A new DC superhero is about to get a proper big-budget origin story, and it’s a standout in more ways than one: Apart from highlighting a character that dates back to the late 1930s, Blue Beetle will portray the first-ever Latino superhero in the DC universe. The first trailer for the film dropped today, and it sketches out a surprising—and funny—origin story for the titular character. It all starts when young Jaime Reyes, a recent college grad searching for work and a bigger purpose in life, comes into possession of a mysterious burger container. At the beginning of the trailer, a woman (Penny, his love interest) thrusts it into his hands with a warning.

“Guard that with your life,” she says, “but do not open it.”

So what does Reyes do as soon as he gets home? He pops the lid, of course.

Out crawls the Scarab, a glowing blue beetle that’s “an ancient relic of alien biotechnology,” as the film’s synopsis puts it. While at first Reyes and his family think the beetle is merely a curiosity, things get serious in a hurry: The Scarab chooses Jaime (played by Xolo Maridueña) as its host.

In a terrifying ordeal, the Scarab attaches to his face and he gets consumed with a new skin that becomes a super suit (it looks like a cross between Iron Man and Ant Man). A robot voice starts talking to him. He has enhanced vision. Two massive appendages sprout from his back. Before he can figure out what happened, the suit propels him from his family’s kitchen into outer space.

It’s a lot to take in, but the trailer offers some clues about what’s to come. Slowly, Reyes realizes what happened to him—with a little help from Penny, who gave him the beetle in the first place.

“It’s called the Scarab,” she says in the trailer. “It’s some kind of world-destroying weapon. It’s designed to protect its host.”

And he’ll need all the protection he can get: The trailer hints that people are after him, including the film’s villain, Carapax the Indestructible Man (played by Raoul Trujillo).

Susan Sarandon and George Lopez also star in Blue Beetle, which was directed by Angel Manual Soto. Although the movie marks the first time the Blue Beetle will be portrayed in a film, the titular character has a long history in the DC universe: He first appeared in comics in 1939.

Check out the full trailer above, and look for Blue Beetle when it premieres in theaters on Aug. 18.
