Glenturret Prowess Among Rarest Scotch Releases of the Year

Only 320 bottles of Prowess are up for grabs, each presented in a Lalique crystal decanter.

The Glenturret bills itself as “Scotland’s oldest working distillery.” Whisky has been pouring out from this site, nestled within a densely thicketed vale of the Highlands, since 1763. It’s a proud past and when you've got a superlative like that, people expect big things. Good thing The Glenturret Prowess really delivers.

Before we dive into the tasting notes and how to track one down, it's important to know its significance to the distillery's lineup.

The Glenturret's Trinity Series

In 2019, The Glenturret was sold to Art & Terroir, a French wine producer and distributor, which also happens to be part of the same group that owns Lalique—among the most prestigious crystal houses in the world. It's resulted in all sorts of notable upgrades, including the arrival of an eponymous restaurant, which just became the first Michelin-starred eatery to ever exist within a Scotch house.

The synergy has been palpable from the start, with the immediate introduction of its Trinity Series in Lalique. It kicked off in late 2020 with the bottling of a 33-year-old limited edition known as Provenance. This month, single malt aficionados finally get a glimpse of the second iteration: The Glenturret Prowess. Just like its predecessor, the liquid comes from a selection of three casks, bottled at 33 years of age, with a total of 320 decanters in existence.

Slender at its base, that stunning decanter slopes outward to reveal broad shoulders, not unlike some sort of celebratory award (think Oscar or World Cup). Turns out that’s not a coincidence.

“For this decanter, I took inspiration from the emotive iconography of trophies, which celebrate success and prowess in a given field of pursuit,” says Marc Larminaux, creative director for Lalique. “The pieces intended for tasting must respect technical constraints of form, dimension, and capacity."

When you've got a magnificent liquid, it should have an equally elegant vessel, no?

The Glenturret master blender Bob Dalgarno adds: “Many hands touch the life of a whisky, each with a skill honed over time—true craftspeople, adding a chapter to the story as it passes them. This release is a celebration of these individuals who contribute to the process, a trophy in their honor.”

The Glenturret Prowess Tasting Notes

If you’re lucky enough to uncork one, you’ll be greeted with a wondrous melange of cedar and other assorted wood spice in its vibrant bouquet. It delivers The Glenturret’s signature style of fruitiness: Apricot, orange marmalade, and candied ginger are the stars of the show, emboldened by distant rumblings of creme brûlée and king cake.

We don’t know whether to be thirsty or hungry. So maybe it’s best we line up reservations at Glenturret’s Michelin star eatery and slake both desires at once. Though if your passion is more aimed at collection than consumption, you’ll undoubtedly be left craving more. Passion, the final installment in the Trinity Series won’t debut for at least another year.
